Minnesota Couples take Solar Ovens to Kenya continued:

As they discussed the prospect of going to Kenya, Rev. James advised the group of a home for orphans he desired to establish on his property. Both of the couples were excited by the idea and offered to help.

Over a six-month period, the two couples energetically raised funds for 30 solar ovens for the orphanage and other people in Kenya.

In addition they solicited in kind donations from individuals and business: beds, mattresses, bedding, desks, medical equipment and supplies, school supplies, clothing, toys, food, etc., etc., and stored them in the Kerber’s garage over the summer and fall. In November they filled a forty-foot container with the supplies and sent them on their way to Kenya.

The couples traveled to Kenya spending 9 weeks during December, January, and February assisting Rev. James in setting up the orphanage as well as representing the Solar Oven Society.

One of their first steps was to put solar ovens to work for their own use. For a sixty-day period they pasteurized their own water and cooked their own meals in the Sport. Their modeling demonstrated to the Kenyans the power of the sun to pasteurize water and cook meals. They had only one day they were not able to rely on solar energy. 59 of the 60 days they relied on the free clean energy of the sun.

Everywhere they went the Kenyans were thrilled with the solar ovens. All the Kenyans wanted to know where they could get one.

This is where others become involved. Funds are needed to ship containers of solar ovens to meet many daily needs of literally millions of people around the globe. Contacts with corporate and foundation funding are helpful also. All contributions to the Solar Oven Society, an IRS approved 501 (c) (3) non-profit corporation, are tax deductible.

The mission of the Solar Oven Society is to provide low-cost, effective, durable, attractive solar ovens, education, and training, to help families in sun-rich, fuel-poor countries improve their health, time, nutritional, financial, and environmental resources.

The clean free energy of the sun helps in so many ways – pasteurizes water making it safe to drink and prevents disease, cooks food, saves cutting of trees for firewood or charcoal, helps retain the trees to attract rain for growth of food crops and to retain precious top soil, saves times and energy required to gather fuel, helps the family budget for the portion of money spent on fuel, provides better nutrition, etc., etc.

With your help, we can help families and the environment, one meal at a time!
